Some folks think acai is the #1 superfood.  Okay, so what does that really mean?  Superfood is a word that is used to describe foods with a high nutritional content that promotes good health.  Som people call it the number 1 superfood because they feels that it provides the most benefit in terms on nutrition and general health and allows them to shed those pounds they have been akin to all their life at the same time The purpose of this article is to discuss the acai berry and its beneficial implications to good health and nutrition.

While the acai berry has been around for centuries it has just lately come to the forefront as an alternative health supplement.  The acai berry comes from a type of palm tree that natively grows in floodplains and swamps in the South American rainforest.  The fruit of the acai berry is small, round, and dark purple similar to that of a blueberry.  The fruit grows in tight knit bunches on the palm tree similar to flowers of the lilac or hyacinth. The palm produces two crops per year.

The acai berry has been acclaimed as such a great super food because the berry is naturally rich in omega fats, amino acids, electrolytes, protein, and vitamins A, B1, and E.  The berries are harvested as food. The berries can also be eaten just as they are and are frequently mixed with granola in southern Brazil as an energizer.  The berries and pulp have also been used to flavor ice cream. .  The juice and pulp are used in a variety of juice   Studies have shown that the blood antioxidant capacity increases within two hours of consuming a commercial acai juice.

Throughout the Amazon, acai is known for its fantastic health benefits.  Acai has been used for the treatment of digestive problems, skin irritation, sexual dysfunction, and even insomnia. This is probably a result of stimulating the body with the antioxidant while not raising blood sugar levels as this berry is lower in sugar as well.

Acai is available to public today in various forms.  Juices or mixed juices are sold as well as acai pulp powder or freeze-dried powder.  The reason for this is that the nutrition component of the berry begins to break down once it is picked from the tree.  Many manufacturers of acai products do so right in the Amazon to insure that the products are still enriched with these vital nutrients.

In a University of Florida study, extracts from berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested.  According to Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences:

“Acai berries are already considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants,” Talcott said. “This study was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries.”

The acai juice has been used by professional baseball players for quite some time as a strengthening and anti-inflammatory dietary supplement. There are also indications that acai juice can reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood stream.
